Friday Fictioneers!

Hello world! A tale for you on this cold winter’s day, from the awesome Rochelle Wisoff!

An exercise in loneliness.

100 words

He grasps the bright cold padlock, the metal stinging his palm. The chain rattles as he pulls on it—it’s the only thing keeping the gate closed. He flashes back to hot summer nights, of sneaking in through this gate to meet in the courtyard beside the koi pound, long after her parents were in bed.

He brought her through this gate after their honeymoon, carried her right to their bedroom where they locked away for what seemed years.

Now here he stands on the outside, a stranger looking in, listening to his children playing in rooms he once haunted.
